Reproductive Biology
Neem can be raised through seed or vegetative propagation but it is mostly regenerated
through seeds which have very short viability. This restricts seed origin, collection and tree
improvement work. Vegetative propagation can, however, be used for collection after cloning
of genotypes.
Vegetative Propagation. The tree reproduces
by root suckers and it can be easily
propagated b root cuttings. The species
coppices well. Shoot cuttings and air layering
propagation is easy. Stumps of two-year old
plants give high survival rate.
Seed Propagation. Seeds fall on ground in
rainy season and must be used within 1-2
weeks. In India, tree reproduces freely
through self-sown seed and plants establish
themselves easily even on dry and poor soil.
Seeds are collected in July from the trees
when ripe and sown soon after collection.
Direct sowings give very good results.
