Neem in India
Araecerus fasciculatus DeGeer and A. suturalis (Boheman)
The grubs of these beetles are polyphagous and bore into the fruits of several trees including neem.
ficus, acacia, etc. The females lay eggs singly in ripe, moist fruits by gnawing holes in them. Larvae
hatch in about a week and bore into the seeds. The larvae are full-grown in about 3-4 weeks and
pupate in the hollowed out seeds. Adult beetles emerge from the pupae in 7-10 days. After pairing, the
females begin to oviposit. Emergence of beetles from the infested seeds continues from March to
December but is most abundant during spring and autumn. In all, 6-7 generations may be completed
in a year 4,6.
