Neem in India
Aonidiella orientalis (Newstead)
The oriental scale is one of the most injurious sapsuckers of neem. It is flat, oblong and varies in
colour from yellow to pale brown or dull reddish brown. It covers thickly the shoots and stems (upto
2-3 cm dia), often spreading to the leaves. The scale secretes a thick waxy layer covering the shoots
and stem with green bark. The fruits (berries) may also be infested with the scale. In severe
infestation, the growth is retarded; leaves shed and young plants may be killed. In older trees, severe
infestation causes dieback in growing shoots. Breeding is continued round the year with overlapping
generations. Eggs are laid under a protective covering. On hatching, the nymphs start feeding on soft
tissues.
