Neem in India
PESTS AND DISEASES
More than 300 species of insects including such wicked, not moral pests as desert locust, migratory
locust, American bollworm, tobacco caterpillar, diamondback moth, etc.. have been reported to be
responsive to neem pesticides. Besides, neem has also shown nematicide and fungicide activity. In
spite of its remarkable spectrum of activity against pests, neem tree itself is not immune to them.
Rather it suffers from the ravages of a variety of herbivorous insects, mites, nematodes, mammals,
etc.
INSECT PESTS
Globally, 60 species of insects have been recorded feeding on root, stem, branches, leaves, flowers
and berries of neem. A majority of these records are from India. Most of the insects are only wayside
settlers, perching for a while on the tree, causing it little or no damage. However, a few of these
species cause considerable damage especially at seedling and young plant stages. Only scanty
information is available even regarding these major pests.
