Neem in India
Root Rot

The disease is caused by Ganoderma lucidum and is reported to occur sporadically in trees raised
without removing the stumps and roots of the original tree crop. The fungus attacks the sapwood and
causes white spongy rot. As a result of rotting of roots, the tree is unable to get water supply from the
soil. This results in yellowing and drying of the foliage and may ultimately cause tree mortality. The
infected trees show the characteristic fruiting bodies of the fungus, which arise from the base of the
stem and are invariably attached to the infected roots.
