OCCURRENCE IN FOREST TYPES
Neem occurs in tropical dry deciduous and thorn forests and in tropical dry evergreen forests in the
following sub-types as distinguished by Seth and Champion.
(a) Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests
(i) Very dry teak forest in association with teak, Boswellia Serrata, Anogeissus latifolia, Sterculia
urens, Lannea coromandelica etc.
(ii) Southern dry mixed deciduous forest, in association with Boswellia Serrata, Anogeissus
latifolia, Terminalia tomentosa, Acacia leucophloea, A. catechu, Bauhinia sp. etc.
It is also occurs in the following degradative and edaphic stages of dry deciduous forests. Dry
deciduous scrub; Anogeissus pendula forests; Babul forest, Babul Savanna, inundation babul forest.
(b) Southern Tropical Thorn Forests
(i) Southern thorn forest in association with Acacia nilotica sp. indica, A. latronum, A, catechu, A.
ferruginea, A. leucophloea, A. chundra, Chloroxylon sweitenia, Albizzia amara. Etc.
It also occurs in southern thorn scrub.
(c) Southern Tropical Thorn Forests
(i) Desert thorn forests in association with Acacia Senegal. Leucophloea. Prosopis cineraria,
Holoptelea integrifolia, Flacourtia indica, Balanites aegyptiaca etc.
(ii) Tropical dry evergreen forest in association with Manilkara hexandra, Albizzia amara, A. lebbek,
Sapindus emarginatus, Tamarind us indica etc.
